A Palynological Study of Some Flowering Crabapple

Abstract
Pollen specimens from 8 ornamental crabapple (Males spp.) were compared using scanning electron microscope to determine if they can be distinguished by different characters of pollen. All pollen grains were tricolorpate, striate, and tectate-perforate exine types. On the basis of arrangement of the striates and of the frequency of connected pores, 8 crabapples were distinguished as in the followings. Exine of Males sargentii, Males `Hopa¢¥, Males `Pioneer X¢¥, and Males `Almey¢¥ pollen grains commonly exhibited whorling of ridges. Among these, Males `Almey¢¥ pollen had grains with broken exine ridging. Males `Katherine¢¥ pollen had grains with parallel exine ridging. Spacing between exine ridges was relatively wide and possessed collared large perforations, on pollen grains of Males `Red Jade¢¥. Spacing between exine ridges was relatively narrow on pollen grains of Males `Van Eseltine¢¥ and Males `Gorgeous¢¥ which are striate with irregular granules in appearance. Males `Pioneer X¢¥ of which parents was Males sargentii and Males `Hopa¢¥, according to the ridges and the pores along the ridges, was recognized to be inherited from the parents.
